Stop 12- Medina Lake in Lakehills, TX

Monday 2/17 – Friday, 2/21

Lakehills, TX is a small, rural community. We chose to stay here because we needed a place for a few days before the KOA in San Antonio would be available- the San Antonio Rodeo was running from February 3-28th and it limited availability quite a bit.

When we purchased our camper, we were given a free membership from Blue Dog RV to Thousand Trails, an RV membership to different campgrounds throughout the US. Our membership level allows travelers to stay for up to 28 days at a regional site and its all covered as a part of the ~$500 membership without extra fees. We decided to take advantage of a few free days at Thousand Trails (TT) and pad our pocketbooks. Unfortunately, we were particularly unimpressed with the Thousand Trails Medina Lake campground, despite it’s decent reviews online. The site is tucked pretty far back off the main road, so we had to drive by a considerable number of trailer homes that were in desperate need of some TLC. When we arrived, we observed a rundown facility and jaded TT employees. The activity center was closed for renovation (nowhere mentioned on their website or during booking) and there were more than a few dozen sites (the premier sites by the water too) that were inoperable- needing electrical work or sewer work or? It just wasn’t a good vibe.

TT allows you to choose your own site upon arrival, so you get to drive around to find a site that will both fit your rig as well as work for your own wants/needs. With so many overgrown trees as well as broken down campsites, it was pretty frustrating to keep driving around with our RV behind us on all of the curvy and crumbling drives. We were more than ready to go when it was time to leave. Let’s just say that we were pretty grossed out when it came time for us to dump our gray water (think dish soap water, etc) and it backed up out of the sewer. Clark was NOT happy. In addition, there was a historic-looking colonial home and barn at the entrance by the pool that were in complete disrepair and almost all of the live oak trees needed a good trim. The deer would walk all throughout the campsite and some of them were pretty mangy looking and we thought some of them might be carrying CWD.

Overall, not for us, but we did manage to make lemons out of lemonade by meeting a wonderful librarian in the neighboring town of Pipe Creek and they also had a great playground outside. In the pictures above, there are a few of the beautiful clouds in the sky.

Don’t be a stick in the mud!

This picture above was our motto, “Don’t be a stick in the mud!”
